Bayerisches Zentrum für Angewandte Energieforschung e.V.

ZAE – More than just a research institute

ZAE Bayern is a non-university research institute for applied energy research. It has about 190 employees and is institutionally funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. ZAE Bayern offers its partners from industry and science complete innovation packages for efficient and sustainable energy systems.

The central areas of expertise are renewable energy, energy storage and energy efficiency. Here, ZAE Bayern combines materials research, component development and system optimization in an interdisciplinary research approach to create a seamless value chain. The researchers at ZAE Bayern work at the interface between basic research and applied industrial research. Research topics include nanomaterials, thermal and electrochemical energy storage, energy-efficient processes, photovoltaics, energy-optimized buildings and urban quarters, smart grids, as well as cross-sector energy systems linking the electricity and heating/cooling sectors.

ZAE Bayern’s goal is to realize an energy supply that is as CO2-neutral as possible through the synergetic use of renewable energies and energy efficiency technologies. To this end, our institute conducts a large number of research projects with industry, from SMEs to large corporations, as well as with university and non-university research partners. The focus here is on the practical application of scientific findings.
