Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung

Sustainable paths for the energy turnaround – Research for the environment and society.

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ shows ways for a sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of mankind and the environment.

Energy research at the UFZ investigates questions of the spatial effectiveness of the energy transition and develops integrated concepts for the efficient provision, distribution and storage of renewable energies and energy sources. Natural and social scientists, engineers and modelers are researching the drivers and actors in the new energy mix and which economic, legal and political framework conditions are necessary to take advantage of opportunities, exploit potentials and minimize or avoid conflicts and risks.

The UFZ supports politics, business and the public in better understanding the consequences of human actions for the environment and in developing options for social decision-making processes. Only through early recognition of problems in the area of conflict between the environment and society can precautionary solutions be developed.
